Samira’s Tale of Spaghetti with Yogurt Sauce | A Story of Love, Roots & Discovery
This piece was an absolute joy to write. Getting to chat with Azita was even better. On occasion, she’d leave me voice memos while taking her long walks in the city(so cool to hear Tehran in the background); I’d return them with memos I’d record during my hot walks at the park near the kids’ school. Pen-pal memos and her beguiling guidance were the strawberries on top of a cheesecake. Though I wrote the piece in the summer, it was published in September, a few days after my mother-in-law, the recipe’s matriarch, passed away. Makes this piece even that much more of a time capsule.
